The catacombs were created primarily as burial sites due to Roman law prohibited burials within the city walls, so the underground network was created as burial sites for Christians, Jews and some pagans. The catacombs and underground network also started to act as meeting points for Christian communities to celebrate mass in secret and away from persecution.

Nowadays, the catacombs and underground networks are very popular tourist attractions pulling visitors from all over the world to see the spaces and learn a little more of the history.

The Catacombs of San Sebastiano are also located along Appian Way and are dedicated to Saint Sebastian who was a Christian martyr and is also buried there. These Catacombs are full of delicate frescoes celebrating the lived of Saint Sebastian and the other early Christian martyrs that are buried there with him.

The Catacombs of San Sebastiano were previously used as a quarry for pozzolana which was a type of stone that engineers of the time used to mix with mortar and concrete to strengthen it but then converted in to Catacombs to be the final resting place of the martyrs.
